As we all know, gardening can be one of the beneficial activities that we can do in the extra spaces that we have around our home.
Some people may also make it as one of the ways for them to have a little bit of exercise in their spare time and also to have a little bit of fresh produces that they can consume with their family that is grown from their own effort.
Not many people are actually realized that the gardening activity that they do around their property is having or giving huge benefits to them, the society and the environment. Gardening activities can be said as one of the noble activities that you do without you actually realize how beneficial it is.
It does not matter what type of plants you are growing in your garden, either ornamental or vegetables, below are some of the benefits or your contribution of having plants from the gardening activity that you do around your home:
1. Trapping Dust from the Air.
Whether we realize it or not, we, nowadays, are living in a very busy era with a lot of our activities are contributing a lot of dust into the air.
Not many people know that the plants that they grow in their garden actually help to clean the air in the atmosphere so that they can have clean and fresh air every time they breathe.
All sorts of plants that ranging from the lawn grasses, shrubs and trees will help to trap the dust within the air that will be eventually washed away by the rain water.
If you have been in the construction areas where there are no plants or minimum plants available there, you will easily how worst the situation are there.
In such areas, you may experience the difficulty to breathe and to have clean air as dust will be floating all over the places around you.
2. Increase The Oxygen Availability
The importance of oxygen might not need to be explained anymore as we are all aware that it is something that is necessary for us to continue our lives.
Plants, as what we have learned from the school is the main source for us to get the oxygen in our atmosphere.
It is produced from their photosynthesis process where the plants will absorb the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to make their own food and release back the oxygen to the atmosphere as the byproduct.
In these days, where trees are being cut down every day and forests are vanishing every year, it is time for us to think of something that can compensate the huge loss of the plants that are providing the oxygen for us.
Even little effort can give us huge impact. In the book titled Lawn: Your Guide to a Beautiful Yard the authors stated that a 625 square feet of grass could already help to supply all the oxygen needed for one person for one day. That’s how big the contribution can be with just a small effort and a small piece of an area.
Just imagine if we can grow a lot more plants around our garden and empty places, it will surely help to improve our environment that will eventually help to improve our lives.
3. Heat Reducer
Another contribution of plants that you are growing around your garden is that it could help to reduce the heat in the atmosphere.
It does not need any scientific data for you to understand this, just imagine you are standing on a football field and on cemented area of the same size, which one do you think you will feel hotter? Most people, if not all, will say that they will feel hotter on the cemented area.
Again, in the book titled Lawns: Your Guide to a Beautiful Yard, the authors also stated that the front lawns on a block of eight houses could perform the same cooling work as 70 tons of air conditioning enough to cool 23 homes.
That is how significant the plants are to our environment and that is just from the power of a small lawn area, just imagine how much different could be if there are a lot more plants in our surrounding. So, please do not feel that the gardening works that you do in a small area around your house do not give any significant effect on our environment.
4. Reduce Pollution
Besides helping to trap and clean the dust within the air, plants can also help to clean the chemicals that are polluting our atmosphere.
A study that appeared in ACS, in the Jurnal of Environmental Science & Technology, it is stated that the judicious placement of grass, climbing ivy and other plants in urban canyons can reduce the concentration at street level of nitrogen dioxide by as much as 40 percent and microscopic particulate matter by 60 percent.
For those of you who don’t know about the two pollutants mentioned above, the easiest way of explanation is nitrogen dioxide and microscopic particulate matter can be very harmful to the human health.
The authors of Lawns: Your Guide to a Beautiful Garden book also have an interesting fact on how the lawn grasses help to clean the chemical pollution in our environment. stated that an acre of healthy lawn can absorb hundreds of pounds of pollutants from water and air with their roots. Some of the pollutants mentioned in the book that can be absorbed by grasses are sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, hydrogen fluoride, and nitrates.

5. Reduce Noise
Plants are also known to able to absorb and reduce noise efficiently. Big cities that are full of concrete buildings and vehicles could benefit a lot from this feature by using and manipulating the plants to reduce the level of noise.
There are a few ways on how plants can help to reduce the noise. The first one is through the absorption. The plant’s parts such as the leaves, stems, branches, woods and etc. are able to absorb the surrounding noise by themselves.
The second way on how plants can help you to reduce the noise is through deflection. As we all know, the sound waves, when hitting the concrete walls will reflect back the waves to its source. This situation, however, will not happen when the sound waves hit the flexible material such as the plant’s parts. The flexible materials will vibrate when they were hit by the sound waves and will transform the waves into other types of energy and not the reflecting sound.
Another way on how plants can help us to reduce the level of noise is by refracting the sound that hits their parts. The best example to easily explain this situation is by looking into our own house. What happened if there is no carpeting or curtain in our houses. Any sounds will be bounced all over the places and will also usually create echoes. If there are carpeting and curtains this type of situation will not happen.
6. Increase the Property Value
Lastly, a beautiful and well-maintained garden around the house could also help to increase the value of your property. You can ask any real estate agent about this and you will get the same answer. A property value could increase up to 5 to 15 percent with a nice and well-maintained garden.
What has been discussed here is to show that all the gardening activities that we do are actually a very noble effort that helps to improve the quality of many aspects of our lives.
With the rapidly changing and uncertainty of our climate in these recent days, gardening activity is something that we could consider to do to at least give our help in saving our beloved world.
